Written by Zechariah, a prophet and priest, around 520–480 BCE, the book takes place during the post-exilic period, when the Jews had returned from Babylonian exile and were struggling to rebuild the Temple and restore their nation under Persian rule. Along with Haggai, Zechariah encouraged the people to complete the Second Temple, but his prophecy extends beyond that, offering visions of the future, the coming Messiah, and God's final victory over evil.

The book is divided into two main sections. The first half (chapters 1–8) consists of a series of eight night visions, followed by messages urging repentance and faithfulness. These symbolic visions include images of a man among myrtle trees, four horns and four craftsmen, a flying scroll, and a golden lampstand, all pointing to God’s protection over Israel, judgment on their enemies, the rebuilding of Jerusalem, and the restoration of true worship. Zechariah also delivers messianic prophecies, such as the vision of Joshua the High Priest, who represents God’s ultimate priest-king—a role later fulfilled in Jesus Christ according to Christian interpretation.

The second half (chapters 9–14) shifts to apocalyptic and messianic prophecies, speaking of the coming of a righteous king, the suffering of God's servant, and the final victory of God’s kingdom. One of the most famous prophecies in Zechariah 9:9 foretells the Messiah’s entry into Jerusalem:
"Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey."
